When Am I Most Likely to Get Pregnant?

Every woman’s monthly cycle, just like every woman, is unique. In fact, a woman’s cycle can vary from one month to the next. You are most likely to get pregnant during ovulation, but determining the timing of ovulation can be tricky, so we have a few tips to share.

What is Ovulation?

Ovulation refers to the release of an egg from a woman’s ovary. The ovary releases the egg around 12 to 16 days after the beginning of your last period.

Since sperm can live inside a woman’s body for 3 to 5 days after sex, the possibility of pregnancy is highest during those days around ovulation. Some doctors suggest you are most fertile from day 8 through day 19.

Do I Know When I’m Ovulating?

The average monthly period is 28 to 32 days. However, many women have irregular cycles, which means they can be shorter or longer in any given month. Ovulation typically happens around 14 days before the start of the next cycle.

The Mayo Clinic suggests watching for the following signs of ovulation:

  • Changes in the color and consistency of discharge from the vagina
  • Changes in body temperature (basal)
  • Some women may experience ovulation pain

How Can I Track Ovulation?

Here are a few different methods to track ovulation:

  • Apps that help you monitor your menstrual cycle. However, research suggests that period tracker apps may not be as reliable as they suggest.
  • Observing physical changes (vaginal discharge, physical pain, or basal body temperature)
  • Home ovulation test kits (these detect hormonal changes that occur right before ovulation)
