Compassionate Care You're Worthy Of

If you have recently found out you are unexpectedly pregnant, you may be considering abortion. You’ve come to the right place if you want to know how abortion might affect you physically and mentally. Although we do not provide or refer for abortion, we can provide accurate information about the possible consequences like anxiety and sadness.

Is There a Link Between Abortion and Mental Health Issues?

Studies have found that abortion can cause mental health problems for at least some women. The National Library of Medicine came to the following conclusions:

  • Women who have had an abortion have elevated rates of mental illness compared to women without a history of abortion
  • The abortion experience directly contributes to mental health problems for at least some women
  • Pre-existing mental illness puts women at greatest risk of mental health problems after an abortion

A study from Cambridge University Press discovered, “Women who had undergone an abortion experienced an 81% increased risk of mental health problems.”

The Mayo Clinic states, “Having a medical abortion is a major decision with emotional and psychological consequences.”

Will I Have Mental Health Problems After an Abortion?

Like every woman, every abortion experience is unique. Whether or not you have mental health problems is determined by several factors.

If you are already dealing with anxiety and depression, an abortion will likely add to your negative feelings. The circumstances around your abortion can also add to mental health issues. Are you being forced to have an abortion? Are you dealing with your unplanned pregnancy alone? There are many factors to consider.

Women who struggle with their decision report problems like:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Sadness
  • Grief
  • Feelings of loss
  • Substance use disorder
  • Shame
  • Anger
