Being afraid of giving birth, especially if this is your first time, is understandable. Some women report little to no pain at all, while others tell horror stories. There is no way to predict how your body will respond to childbirth, but there are some things you can do to calm your nerves.
Knowing what to expect can help relieve your fears. At HopePlace, we offer free classes on pregnancy and childbirth to help you be better prepared. Remember, women give birth every day. Let us help calm your fears.
What Are the Signs of Early Labor?
Every woman’s labor experience is unique, just like every woman. There are no set steps to define how yours will go, but there are some early signs to watch for:
- Contractions (which can be anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes apart)
- Cramps (similar to menstrual cramps)
- Pelvic pressure (possibly when the baby drops down from your abdomen)
- Loss of your mucus plug
- Changes in your vaginal discharge
Other potential signs of early labor:
- Fatigue
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Nerve pain in your pelvis
What Are the Signs of Active Labor?
Signs of active labor include:
- Stronger and more consistent contractions
- The baby moves into the birth canal
- You feel the urge to push
- You may experience pain, cramping, or pressure in your lower back or legs
- Your water (the amniotic sac that surrounds the baby) breaks
Simple Breathing Techniques Can Lessen the Pain
Most women’s number one fear is pain during childbirth. A pregnant woman wonders if she will be able to handle the pain or how much pain she will experience. Thankfully, women’s bodies are naturally built for childbirth.
Learn simple breathing techniques to minimize pain. The more relaxed you are during labor, the less pain you will feel. The 4-4-6 method is the easiest. Breathe in through your nose for a count of 4, hold it gently for a count of 4, and slowly breathe out through your mouth for a count of 6.
Free online and in-person classes help you learn other simple breathing techniques. Consider the Lamaze or Bradley methods.
You can also opt for medical pain management, such as an epidural. Resources are available to help you navigate the experience.
