3 Ways to Strengthen Your Relationship Amidst an Unexpected Pregnancy

We imagine you and your partner waited anxiously for the pregnancy test results. As the seconds ticked by, a million thoughts went through your head. What will we do if we’re pregnant? Do I even want to be a parent? Will this destroy our relationship?

When you finally see the two pink lines or read the word “pregnant,” you can hardly believe your eyes. It takes a moment to sink in. Now what?

The team at HopePlace knows the concern, stress, and even fear an unexpected pregnancy can cause. We also know how to help you work through it.

Begin by scheduling a free and confidential appointment at HopePlace. We offer free pregnancy services and are happy to talk with you about your next steps.

In the meantime, here are three tips to help you and your partner build a stronger relationship when life feels out of control.

#1. Communicate

Communication involves both talking and actively listening. You and your partner need to be totally transparent with one another. You both need to have the freedom to speak openly about how you’re feeling.

Make sure you communicate without blaming the other person. Now is not the time for angry conversations. Find a time when you’re both relaxed and able to discuss the situation calmly.

Carefully listen to what your partner is saying, and if necessary, repeat it back to them so you’re certain you understand. Misunderstanding what your partner says can lead to mistrust and confusion.

#2. Make a Plan

Don’t make a quick, anxious decision about how to handle the pregnancy. Consider all of your options. It took two to get pregnant, so it’s important to work as a team to figure out what to do.

You may feel differently about how to handle the pregnancy, but it’s important to work together to find a solution you’re both happy with. No one should force or coerce the other one to make a decision they don’t want to make.

Discuss your goals for the future. Are you both still in school or starting careers? Discuss your finances and what seems realistic. Again, be honest about your future expectations. Not sharing your thoughts can lead to resentment.

Finally, create a step-by-step plan. Speak with your OB/GYN. Meet with an adoption coordinator or discuss the resources available for parenting.

HopePlace can give you information to help you determine your next steps.

#3. Find Support

Schedule a regular date night to stay connected with one another. Enlist the support of close family members or friends.

If necessary, talk with a counselor or mental health professional. A neutral third party can help you sort through your emotions and reach an agreement.

Take advantage of the free services at HopePlace. We can confirm your pregnancy with free pregnancy testing. We also provide free education on pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting. We’re here to support you no matter what choice you make.
